What did you learn today?
We learned that NaHCO3 + HCH3COO = NaC2H3O2 + H20 + CO2

We made a volcano and it exploded which made a lot of bubbles and a funny kind of smell. 
What do you need to learn next?
We want to find out more about the Periodic Table of Elements. Also, our agenda has an element of the month... this month happens to be Na - Sodium.

What did you learn today?
We were a lot closer to 1 000 meters (1 km) today. Today we made it 1 018 meters.
How did you show what you learned?
We did different zig zag by the Whispering Woods and walked all the way to portable. 
What do you need to learn next?
We are curious to find out what a kilometer to Nose Hill would be?

Trundle Wheel test

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned that 1 kilometer has 1000 meters in gym today. 
How did you show what you learned?
We got into 10 groups, after 100 clicks on the trundle wheel (which equalled 100 meters), we yelled STOP and gave the trundle wheel to the next group. We repeated this 10 times (until we walked 1000 meters). We did this to mark the Terry Fox Run route for Wednesday morning. 
What do you need to learn next?
We actually only walked 921 meters and the route needs to be 1000 meters long. Tomorrow we want to find a spot to add 71 meters. We think we need to stay closer to the fence line.We think we should add more meters at the beginning of the route near the baseball diamond or we want to try and walk all the way to the portable before we turn to the soccer posts.

We watched a video about inmates and homeless people gaining the right to vote. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to write a diary entry from the perspective of someone who was historically denied the vote.

Mr. O told us a story about jelly fish during our journal writing. He is an excellent story teller.

We need to use his skills of story telling in our own journal writing to keep our reader interested.

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned that at the end of summer and early fall, a queen wasp will lay eggs (including a new queen) which hatch before winter. 
How did you show what you learned?
We have a wasp nest in our classroom - don't worry most of the wasps are dead and we have a lid on the container so we can observe their behavior. 
What do you need to learn next?
We want to know more accurate information about the behaviors of wasps, specifically the queen.

Mrs. Saunders is away Monday (a sub will be in). She gets to go to Democracy Boot Camp put on by CIVIX - The same group who runs Student Vote.

What did you learn today?
We learned to paint the 4 zones of the forest using watercolors. 
How did you show what you learned?
We sketched the trees from our Special Nature Spot and came inside to do the watercolor wash. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how to paint the trees and do the next layers of our painting. 

Why is there so much garbage in the Whispering Woods? What can/should we do about it?
How old are all those trees?
Can we throw a stick at the wasp nest? Just kidding - but when can we take the wasp nest down and examine it in our classroom?

We played 2 new games called, Heads and Hands and Stepping Stones.

We want to learn more games like that.

We started our science centers that we created... It's just too cool to put into words, you'll just have to come and see what we are up to.

We have 12 centers to complete by next Thursday.

We will hold a school vote on Oct. 15 and we need to learn what each part represents.

We learned that we will participate in the Student Vote on Oct. 15 for the federal election. 
How did you show what you learned?
We have a poster up in our room and the hallway. The grade 6s participated last year for the provincial election.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn the various parties in our riding and what they believe in.

Sept. 11 - FRESH, Hot Air Friday

Note from Mrs. Saunders: Your child was awesome! They all walked so far and not a single complaint! We walked over 5 km :-) We can't wait to see what next Friday brings. 

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned bugs could swim under water. We think it was called the water bug. Water Boatman?
How did you show what you learned?
We sketched what we saw, we discussed with our group members and we observed.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn more about the nature of Nose Hill.
We should try a different path on Nose Hill.
Can we bike there? Let's find out.

1) What animals did we see?
2) What killed those ducks? We saw feathers and bones near the pond. 
3) How could I have been better prepared for today? Hat? More water? Better shoes?

We learned that scientists see old things in new ways and are always collecting objects.

We sat down in a familiar place and observed. We created a collection pocket found objects page. 
What do you need to learn next?
We would like to go outside and see the familiar things in a new way - possibly go to Nose Hill for Fresh Air Friday. 
We need to start to think about what will we do with the information that we gather and the items we are collecting on the Discovery Table.
