We will present to our classmates tomorrow to feel prepared for Thursday.

We talked about public speaking skills today.
How did you show what you learned?
We brainstormed ideas about what strong public speakers do to engage their audience and keep their speech exciting. We watched a TED talks and observed strong public speaking examples. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will create a rubric for our Novel Recommendation and the public speaking skills we will be using.

We participated in World Literacy Day today.

We had an opportunity to read to someone (our little buddies), read to self (in Whispering Woods) and listen to reading (The Wright 3). 
What do you need to learn next?
We can use these skills in our future reading as well as our Novel Recommendation.

Flying Flight in our Pajamas

Agenda:

4 - Come dressed in layers for tomorrow - we will be spending part of our day outside.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We learned about Air, Aerodynamics and Flight from 20 University of Calgary students. 
How did you show what you learned?
We were interviewed by the U of C students and they asked us what we knew about flight and Aerodynamics. We participated in a variety of experiments with a very small group (2 - 5 with 2 student teachers). Some examples included: paper airplanes (gliders) and looked at how to make them go farther, demonstrating low vs. high air pressure, How birds fly?, etc. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to start our next science unit on Flight, Air and Aerodynamics. And, the student teachers will return in two weeks to revisit the concepts we were introduced to today.

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about desk and binder organization. 
How did you show what you learned?
We worked with Kim an occupational therapist from Alberta Health Services. We cleaned our desks, we organized our binders and duo tangs. We could test our binder with the butterfly test.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to do a check-in on Thursday morning. We will meet with Kim next Monday to look at how to organize for a long term project.

The Chronicles of the Sundial

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We learned how to use a sundial and understood what it was showing us. 
How did you show what you learned?
We learned that in order to use a sun dial properly we needed to understand exactly where north is. 

We know the sun doesn't move, but the shadow changed positions because the earth rotated on its axis which caused the sun light to cast a shadow in a different spot each hour. 

What do you need to learn next?
We would like to use them again after the Spring Forward  time change happens and see how that impacts the position of the shadow.

Holding Court...

Learning Intentions 
What did you learn today?
We looked at rounding of decimal numbers today (with Mrs. Osicki) 
How did you show what you learned?
We rounded numbers to the nearest whole number, tenth and hundredth. We struggled with knowing which place value to round it to. 
For example: 1.35 - 1.4  and 1.34  - 1.3 (5 and above, give it a shove, 4 and below, let it go)
What do you need to learn next?
We need some more practice with rounding and move into the thousandths place.

We are on teams of 6 or 7 and focusing on our ready position, bent knees , and accuracy and control of the volleyball.

We will continue to play games for this week and shift our teams each day.

City Hall Trip on Monday - don't forget!

Agenda:
1 - Moon Phases Sheet is due Tuesday

2 - Our field trip to City Hall is on Monday. Students must be bring their litterless lunch, snack, water bottle and clothes for an outdoor, one hour walking tour of Stephen Avenue.
The Bus will leave at 8:45! Students must be at school on time on Monday morning or the bus will be leaving without them. 
Please ensure you dress appropriately for the weather - layers will be important. We begin our day inside City Hall for a 2 hour tour. We hope to eat lunch at Olympic Plaza and then will be walking down Stephen Avenue so ensure you have appropriate footwear.

3 - Science Fair students please bring 2 dollars for your trifold please.

What did you learn today?
We worked with our little buddies to ensure they had a very successful first try at snow shoeing. 
How did you show what you learned?
We helped them get the snow shoes on, keep them tight and talked about how snow shoes are like polar bears large paws. 
What do you need to learn next?
We would like to try the snow shoes up at Nose Hill.

We worked on our Sky Science Centers for the 2nd time today. Each center has a different focus - constellations, the sun, the planets, Meteors, the moon, Sun Dials, Star Tales, Current Events, MARS,  Emitting and Reflecting Light and Eclipses.

We are working through our booklet and doing various activities for each center. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will continue to work on these centers for 3 - 4 more days.

Curling our Head Around Science

We had a residency for the day. She brought brooms, rocks and the house for us to try it out. We had one game and played first to the pin.

We would like to buy a set of curling equipment so we can try this game during physical education.

Winter Wonderland

Amazing first day of Snow Shoeing. Students' positive attitudes and excellent choices in outerwear made for a wonderful first day. We can't wait to try again with a bit warmer weather and hot chocolate :-)

Also, we had the opportunity to watch two astronauts, Shane Kimbrough and Peggy Whitson, on their Space Walk today. They spent approximately 6 hours working on the outside of the ISS changing and repairing some batteries.

We learned how to put on snow shoes and move around the deep snow.

We were the first group at Dr. Coffin to try  out the new snow shoes. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will help our little buddies try them out next Friday.

We created an interactive math journal page on fractions today. We began looking at how fractions relate to decimals and percents.

We did a lot of cutting to create our fraction flip chart.
