The Mission Continues

Agenda:
1) Math - Percent booklet is due tomorrow. 
The Percent quiz will be this Thursday. 
2) Remember to give your parents the Child Care Tax Receipt that was given out today. It is an original document, so don't lose it. 
3)  Our Outdoor School on May 2 - May 5th seems far away but we wanted to give you a reminder about these dates and that you can be paying for this overnight field trip online and in installments over the next few months if you would prefer. There will be an informative parent meeting about 1 month prior to our departure so please watch for information about this in the next month or so.

4) Novel Recommendations will continue tomorrow. 

5) Our grade 5/6s will be visiting Simon Fraser for the performance of The Little Mermaid on March 8th from 9:30 - 11:30.

6) Just a heads up - Grade 6s will visit Simon Fraser on March 22nd for our grade 7 Transition Day. 

7) Interactive Math Journal will be due on Thursday this week.

8) March 9th - Our next Spirit Day is Jersey Day and it is Fun Lunch too.

9) March 14th - Ski/Snowboard Lesson - 9:00 - 3:00

Learning Intentions
What did you learn today?
We continued to practice our Jungle Safari today. We have done this course in previous grades, so we are being judges for each other as we move throughout the course. 
How did you show what you learned?
We alternated from being judges to spies. We practice going around the course and taking the challenges that are part of the course. Some of the most challenging parts are: the pylons with the hockey stick across, crawling through the 2 tables and/or the snake pit, the ladder with the 2 hoops.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to challenge the course form one checkpoint and all the way back to that same checkpoint without any mistakes.

Novel Rec's are Rolling In with Rootbeer and Cookies.

There will be an informative parent meeting about 1 month prior to our departure so please watch for information about this in the next month or so.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We started working with Balance Problems. 
How did you show what you learned?
We were given a total for the whole equation. Each shape had a different value and we needed to use clues to figure out what each shape was worth. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will do this again next Monday. We will need to determine the answers without help next time.

Skater/Snowshoe Paradise! 'The Snow Rushes On'

Agenda:
1 - The field trip to the outdoor rink was great. Students displayed awesome attitudes and great teamwork skills to help clear the snow! Thanks to Mr. M. for getting the ice surface ready over the last few days (and nights). Thanks to Mrs. M. for the hot chocolate and to Mrs. D. for the yummy Rice Krispy Squares. Also, thanks to Mrs. B., Mrs. M and Mr. D. for coming to help supervise all the kids on the ice and in the snow and walking down with us.
Our rosy cheeks are a great sign of the fun we had on this perfect Canadian Winter Day.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We learned how to display a positive attitude and show team work. 
How did you show what you learned?
We played with all of our classmates, took turns with the ring or puck, we helped each other up when we fell down. Some students shared their sticks. There was almost no complaining about the cooler weather and the deep snow. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will continue to use these skills back at school and never give up even when things are hard.

New Space Knowledge

Agenda:
1 - We are going to head to the Outdoor Rink beside Simon Fraser on Friday Feb. 24th from 9:30 - 11:30am. Please bring your skates and CSA approved skating helmet if you want to skate. Otherwise you will have a chance to use the snowshoes in and around the Simon Fraser/CJP/Brentwood rink area. 
Also, please dress in layers for the weather tomorrow. Snow pants are a good idea. 
Please bring a water bottle and snacks for the rink.

Pink Shirt Day was a Success!!!

We have moved from station to station on the climber and large equipment. We are working on balancing, strength and rope climbing.

We have one more day of the stations and then next week we start Jungle Safari.

We continued our work on decimals today. We also began to prepare for our quiz on Thursday.

We are using some of the strategies we used with Ms. Kim and are making up our own questions and answers to help us study for this quiz.

We will have some in class time tomorrow to review.

Test Taking Strategies

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We wrote our Sky Science Multiple choice test today.
How did you show what you learned?
We learned test taking skills such as, tracking the questions so we fill in the correct bubble, determining the 2 'really wrong' answers and the 2 'possibly right' answers, we learned how to trust our gut and choose the best possible answer. We also learned that multiple choice tests can test our science and math knowledge but mostly they are reading comprehension tests. We learned to read each question carefully even if we think we know the right answer. 
What do you need to learn next?
We wonder how well we would do on a multiple choice test before we even learn the content. So, for our Air and Aerodynamics unit we are going to do a pre-test to see how well we are able to do.

We had the opportunity to share Valentine's treats with our classmates today.

We received and gave Valentine's Day cards and treats. We shared a movie together and talked about what it means to be a good friend.

We worked on editing our News Articles.

We had a news article that needed to be fixed with a partner. We looked at past tense and order of the paragraphs. We began to edit someone else's article.

We need to get ours edited and then do our good copy.

We got to perform in front of a crowd and share what we learned about different drumming techniques.

We played Djemba Drums with our hands and Dune-Dunes with sticks.

We would like to use the drums we have at school so that we can continue to learn more of the notes.

We are working in 2 groups for math. Grade 6's are focusing on multiplying and dividing decimals and grade 5's are focusing on adding and subtracting decimals.

We are working through some textbook examples and the grade 5s are creating word problems to share with their peers. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will be doing division of decimals next week. Grade 5's will complete and share their word problems.

We had our second visit with our student teachers this afternoon. On the first visit we taught them what we knew and today they taught us what they knew. 
How did you show what you learned?
We made paper helicopters and tested them with different paper clips.
We learned a lot about air pressure. 
We learned how air planes and hot air balloons fly. 
We learned about the Bernoulli's principle. 

What do you need to learn next?
We need to begin our classroom study of Air, Aerodynamics and Flight!

Amazing Day of Learning!!!

We presented our Learning Celebration today.
How did you show what you learned?
We had families and fellow students move from project to project in the gym. When they came to our project they might not have known very much but when they left, they knew lots. 
"I really like when I saw the kid's face when I told them a fact, 'Wow! Really!'"
"I loved that my mom or dad was able to make it today."
"It was funny that we had a few technical difficulties this afternoon!"
"I was proud that people like what they saw during my project!"
"We enjoyed putting on this event!" 
"I really like the questions people asked, especially the ones they didn't know the answers to."
"It was easier to present to adults than the younger students. The parents actually listened to us and understood all our big words!"

"Next time I would like to have something for them to touch or do."
