Chilly Day

Agenda:

1) Here is another robot-themed game that provides a VERY good and basic introduction to some basic programming concepts.  
Students will be using loops extensively, so this gives a good visual guide to the basics.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We had an opportunity to work with a grade 2/3 class to help improve their descriptive writing skills. 
How did you show what you learned?
The teacher drew a monster picture and the grade 2/3 class had to write about the picture using descriptive words and phrases. Our class read the descriptive paragraph and drew our versions of their robot. We were all very close to the actual drawing. 
What do you need to learn next?
We are going to send them a paragraph about our robot tomorrow morning.

7 - Change this fraction to a decimal -   25/100 and 30/100 ~ We have just begun our unit on Decimals - talk with your families about ways they use decimals every day.

What did you learn today?
We learned that it can be scary and intimidating to get up in front of a group of people to perform. Sometimes you can feel nervous but that nervous energy can be ok. 
How did you show what you learned?
We tried our best. We focused on our strong drumming skills. We embraced the opportunity and celebration of the event. 
What do you need to learn next?
We can apply these skills and this successful event to future opportunities when we feel nervous infant of an audience.

What did you learn today?
We learned that salt lowers the freezing point of ice (ice cubes melt faster when salt is added.)
How did you show what you learned?
We conducted a science experiment and discovered what happens when salt is added to an ice cube. We followed the scientific method and made observations.
What do you need to learn next?
We wondered if other crystal substances would melt ice also? Maybe sugar?

Chances are very good that tomorrow will be a Blue Day again. However, we have a brief activity that we would like to do outside tomorrow. Please come with hats, mitts, warm boots and snow pants for our activity. 

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We began looking at electricity today. We 'played' with the materials to discover what we will be working with oner the next few weeks. We will be working towards working with robots and the Dacta Lego kits.  
How did you show what you learned?
We worked in 3 different groups - looking through and playing with the materials, exploring the Portal for other electricity materials and finding appropriate books and websites to use as reference materials during the unit. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will begin learning about circuits, batteries, bulbs, switches, etc.

What did you learn today?
We learned that lots of animals use the over and underpasses in Banff National Park. We also discovered the importance of these to the Mandate of the National Parks of Canada. 
How did you show what you learned?
We looked at the different reasons why national parks are important to us. 
What do you need to learn next?
Next time we are out in a National Park, like Banff, we want to ask our family: Why do you think we have National Parks? Here is a chance to educate them about the Mandates of the National Parks.

We learned about the different National Parks in Canada - especially Jasper and Banff. We learned their stories and how they are important.

We viewed a Ted Talks, a school project video and reviewed the National Parks Mandate.  
What do you need to learn next?
We are going to write an informational paragraph and why it is important to protect National Parks.

We discussed Natural Disasters that can occur in different regions of Canada

We observed pictures and identified which region each natural disaster belonged too. We also discussed the flood of 2013. 
What do you need to learn next?
We want to learn more about these unique situations.
