We learned about Air and Flight today - specifically the 4 forces and the control surfaces.

We had a guest speaker - Mrs. Saunders' favourite one EVER! And David had so many flying toys for us to observe and even try. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to do hot air balloons, streamlining, how things hover and parachutes.

We are going to bake these pine cones in the oven tomorrow and observe the scales open and release the seed wings! Some of us will research if cones are considered Male or Female

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We learned the difference between deciduous and coniferous trees. Coniferous trees have needles and cones and deciduous have leaves the 'decide' to fall off in the fall. 
How did you show what you learned?
We completed a scavenger hunt in our school yard and in Whispering Woods. We tallied the type of tree, the bark patterns and the branching patterns. From these we created fractions, ratios and percents. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will be able to identify the trees we see while we are at Outdoor School.

What did you learn today?
We Learned the stages of a rocket. We also learned that rockets carry their own oxygen supply in order to move where there is no oxygen in space. We also learned that rockets are more streamlined than an air plane. 
How did you show what you learned?
We saw Mr. O'Reilly's Apollo V Lego Model and we discussed the differences. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to discuss how things that fly are aerodynamic and streamlined.

We learned about Tree Cookies. 
How did you show what you learned?
We received a special gift from the Polski's - our Outdoor School Name Tags - Tree Cookies. 
We also learned the story a tree cookie can tell about the life of a tree- the growing conditions, how old it is and any environmental factors - like a fire or insects. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will each get our own tree cookie and decorate it with our Nature Name and our own name.

What did you learn today?
We learned different strategies to study for tests and quizzes. 
How did you show what you learned?
We learned from Allison our Occupational Therapist. She had a presentation and gave us lots of good examples. 
What do you need to learn next?
Our grade 6s will apply this to the PATs and we can all use it during different unit quizzes. Also, if we don't understand a question (especially on Exam Bank) we will take a picture or screen shot and e mail it to Mrs. Saunders.

Tomorrow is the Volunteer Tea - if you are a babysitter come dressed in comfy clothes and ready to play and supervise the younger siblings in the gym. Have a few game ideas ready to play with them.

We learned facts about Photosynthesis - it happens under water, photo means light and synthesis means combining, chlorophyll makes the leaves green which is needed for photosynthesis, plants take in CO2 and sunlight and release O2 and sugar(glucose) for the plant.

We watched a video and learned a song. We also read about it in our teacher read aloud - Raven's End - what a coincidence.

We went out to Whispering Woods. We sat at our tree and sketched our tree. We labelled the 4 levels and identified living and non-living things in each area.

We will learn more about Trees and Forests as we lead up to outdoor school. Also, we will get to apply our knowledge about this unit while we are at Outdoor School.

We learned that air can be compressed.

We filled a balloon and taped it to a straw on a string. When we released the air, the balloon moved in the opposite direction of the opening.

We will prove that air is made up of different gasses.

We learned that Bernoulli's Principle means moving air equals lower air pressure.

We drew a diagram, labelled it, we used a model Air Foil, we observed the moving tin cans and Rhys' air foil shape.

We need to prove the last few properties of air.

We go out in our field and measure the position of the sun using our fists.

Fresh Air Friday - The weather is looking better but please come dressed in layers as we will be outside working on our caring for the trees project.

We learned how to organize our desks and binders.
How did you show what you learned?
We learned this from our Occupational Therapist - Allison. She had a presentation about how to stay organized. We debated whether to use chronological order to organize our papers or not. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to maintain what we learned today and try and keep things where they belong.
