What did you learn today?
We continued to work on our mini-projects in Social Studies. 
How did you show what you learned?
We continued to research in the textbook and the computers. We are recording our findings in Google Slides, an organization chart and note form.
What do you need to learn next?
We will be putting this information into a PowerPoint/Google Slides, poster, booklet, pamphlet or a written report. This is due Monday.

The Velvet Mite

5. Dress to visit Whispering Woods tomorrow as we need to collect a sample of the eggs to be sent to Dr. Fisher in Kansas. 

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We attended the Yellow Fish Road presentation and learned why there are Yellow Fish painted near the storm drains. 
How did you show what you learned?
We participated in an activity to see where the items we place on our lawns and driveways end up in our water system. The water that goes down our drains is not treated. 
What do you need to learn next?
We  need to make responsible choices about products we use our lawns and sidewalks.

Book vs. Movie

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We listened to the story The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore and we also watched the Award winning short film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAr3hAsyAD0 
How did you show what you learned?
We discussed what the story was about and asked questions to help each other understanding. We also watched the movie to do a comparison of the two. 
What do you need to learn next?
We want to think of ways to apply imagery and personification like this to our writing.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We went to Nose Hill today (even though the weather wasn't great - we were awesome possums)
We did not find any examples of the same red eggs at the base of any of the Aspen Poplar trees. 
How did you show what you learned?
We hiked up to Nose Hill and went into an Aspen Grove and each group selected  25 trees to investigate. We kept track of the 25 trees in various ways. We all came to the same conclusion that there are no red eggs on the bases of these particular Aspen Poplars
What do you need to learn next?
Why are the eggs only in Whispering Woods and not on Nose Hill?
Why do the trees in Nose Hill look different than our trees? More uniform bark colour, green moss at the base, the diameter of the trunks seemed smaller

What 'Mite' it be?

Agenda:
1) Math Homework - complete page 2 (page 21) - Due Monday

2) Tomorrow we are going to Nose Hill to see if we can find the same red eggs on the trees there. Wear long pants, long sleeved shirt and as per Dr. Fry's advice do a Tick check tomorrow night.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We had an amazing and informative visit with Dr. Fry today. Dr. Fry talked about what we found on the base of the Aspen Poplar trees. We learned it was a type of mite but we aren't sure yet about the exact type or if it is harmful to the trees. 
How did you show what you learned?
We listened to him in the classroom first, we got to ask a few questions and then we went to Whispering Woods to look at the actual eggs on the trees. He used a microscope attached to his cell phone to show us images of the eggs. 
What do you need to learn next?
We have to find out what kind of mite it is and figure out what we need to do about it. Alex Coker from the City of Calgary will come on Monday to view the eggs with us and give us a perspective from the city.

Whispering Woods Wonder

Agenda:
1) Math Homework - complete page 2 (page 21) 

2 ) Dr. Ken Fry is visiting tomorrow morning from Olds College. We will be discussing the red powder (Our What Mite it Be? investigation) we have found with him and taking him to Whispering Woods so that he can collect samples to take back to his lab. We are hopeful he will be able to help us understand what we have discovered. 
You need to have your question ready for Dr. Fry tomorrow morning.

Stuck Story ideas

Science Fair Notes:
Wednesday April 19 - Trifolds wil be dropped off at the Olympic Oval by Ulla tomorrow after 2pm.
Friday April 21 - Participants will need to be dropped off at the ice level of the Olympic Oval between 7:30 and 8:00 am.
Judging will be from 8:00 - 1:30 and second round of judging will be from 1:30 - 3:30. Students can be picked up at 3:30.
Saturday April 22 - 8:45 - 9:00am - Participants arrive and projects will be open to the public. This is a great time for parents, friends and family to go and view all of the projects.
11:00 or before - the Medallion Ceremony
12:00 or before - Awards Ceremony
1:30 - End of the Fair.
Please take your trifold home!!!!

We began working on our Garage Bands to make a 1-minute ring tone. 
How did you show what you learned?
We started using Garage Band and we listened to B Flat Minor profile. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will see all of the notes on the music blog and we will need choose one that mosts matches our personality.

What did you learn today?
We received an e mail from Ken Fry Ph.D. a professor of Horticulture at Olds College. He is going to take a day off of work and visit our class and Whispering Woods to help us identify the organism we have found on the trees.
How did you show what you learned?
We received various e mails throughout the day from him. He asked lots of questions and gave us some great ideas of where to start our research. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will ask and answer some of the questions he gave us before his visit next week.

We reached out to professors and professionals in the City of Calgary to find out what the red substance and these insects could be. 
How did you show what you learned?
We emailed and called 311 as well as an entomologist to start asking questions. 
What do you need to learn next?
We hope to find out what the insects are and create a plan about what we should or shouldn't do about it.

2) We have our Glass For Kids Residency Wednesday from 11:00 - 12:00. We will be creating a small glass piece to decorate the fences around our school yard.

We continued our study of Elaborative Detail (ask me to see what I wrote today). Today's focus was Critical Settings.
How did you show what you learned?
We chose a picture of a setting. We used our 5 senses to pause the action and write a paragraph to create an image in our reader's mind. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will be doing the same thing with an important object from home (possibly a talisman) to share with our classmates tomorrow.

We chose a picture of a character and started to brainstorm ideas about that character. We are using our Interactive Literacy Journal to work on these picture prompts.

We will write a character description using elaborative detail tomorrow.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We proved that Air Takes Up Space. 
How did you show what you learned?
We were unable to blow up a balloon (even Sammy and all his hot air couldn't do it) until we cut a hole in the bottom of the pop bottle. And, we observed that water cannot flow into a sealed beaker. Well, it drips very slowly actually.
What do you need to learn next?
We will do one more experiment to prove that air takes up space and then move onto Air has mass.

We began looking at the 8 Properties of Air that we will be studying over the next 2 weeks.

We looked inside an 'empty' box and talked about what was inside. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will conduct a variety of experiments to prove what we know about air and the importance of air.
