Elevator Math

Agenda:
We will be going outside for Fresh Air Friday tomorrow - Please make sure you wear your rain gear as we will be outside sketching the Nature Grounds as they look before the 9 aspens are planted this upcoming week. Next week we will sketch the after and we will use these images for our Bugle Article in the upcoming months. 

Also, if you have a copy of the Brentwood Bugle be sure to check it out for an article some of our classmates wrote.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We learned about coordinate geometry, x and y axis and about Cartesian Planes. 
How did you show what you learned?
We observed Mrs. Saunders' dramatization of an elevator to demonstrate x and y axis - we will never get this image out of our mind and therefore we can never forget which is x and which is y.
What do you need to learn next?
We are applying our skills and creating images using coordinate geometry.

Microbes, Crystals, and Lava Lamps are Coming Home

Agenda:
Regarding the phone call from the school yesterday - The message was regarding the Aspen grove trees and volunteers needed to help dig the holes on Sunday between 10-1. It asked parents to call the school if they could volunteer to help with the digging of the holes in preparation for the 9 aspen trees we have coming to enhance our Naturegrounds.

What did you learn today?
We learned a lot about our classmates histories and interesting stories that we would never have known. 
How did you show what you learned?
We presented in front of our classmates with posters, Slides, Prezi and oral presentations. Some students brought artifacts, food, maps, flags, etc. 

What do you need to learn next?
We need to hear the rest of the stories from kids who didn't present today and have a chance to ask more questions.

Pack extra water and snacks too.

We learned how to sketch and shade trees, specifically the Aspen trees in our Whispering Woods.

We worked with our sketch artist, Ryder and used our new artist kits and our visual journal. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to add leaves and more details to make it look more realistic. We will be using our skills to draw a before and after view of the area where the 9 new trees and bench are going to be going.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
The Grade 5s started working with our Groundwater model today. Thanks to Rowan's mom for lending it to us and setting it up. We are excited to see what kinds of experiments we can do with the model over the next few weeks. Plus we love the calming sound the water pump makes :-)

The Grade 6s are looking at Input/Output machines in math. This is always a fun why to work with numbers and try and find all the different rules.  We look forward to making some of our own Input/Output equations. 


Students worked in a variety of groups to accomplish things from the Class To Do List. There is a lot going on right now for Room 6 and 7. So we are taking any opportunity to get different things finished.

Great Day at the Pond

We had a great field trip to Fish Creek today even though the weather did not cooperate as it was rainy and chilly. However, the kids did awesome!!! They walked, played games, dipped for invertebrates at the pond and even enjoyed a lunch in the rain! Great work everyone.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We learned lots about Wetlands today. Our most important lesson was how to be prepared for a day outdoors, especially when the weather isn't ideal. 
How did you show what you learned?
We showed this by being on a field trip outside all day. It was cold and wet and a lot of us wished we had more or warmer clothes or better foot wear. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will remember this trip while getting ready for future trips.

Field Trip Tomorrow

Agenda:

Tomorrow is our Field Trip to Bebo Grove in Fish Creek Park
We are outside for the entire day tomorrow. It is forecasted to be around 15 Degrees with a possibility of rain. The hike is 5km round trip with lots of stops along the way. 
Please consider the following:
- dress in layers. Wear a waterproof layer with warm layers underneath. We recommend wearing pants as it is tick season
- wear proper footwear - runners, water proof boots/shoes, hiking boots
- mitts and a toque (just in case)
- extra pair of socks
- must bring at least 1 L of water, lunch and extra snacks
- hat, sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses

We learned that oxygen comes from plants, trees and microbes. 
How did you show what you learned?
We worked with our scientists from the U of C today. They talked with us about viruses, fungi, bacteria and microbes. We got to see lots of images and learn about a variety of types. 
What do you need to learn next?
We have one more week to work with them. We need to make signs for the Bio Reactors. We also want to make thank you cards before their last visit.

We worked with representatives from CPAWS and Green Calgary today. We learned about the interdependence of all living things on the Food Web and different adaptations birds have that allow them to fly. 
How did you show what you learned?
We played games, watched a skit and looked for biodiversity in Whispering Woods. 
What do you need to learn next?
We have 2 weeks to work with the items they left us: binoculars, bird skeletons, and a camera to track birds we find. We also need to chose a focus bird to research over the next 2 weeks.
