Fresh Air Friday tomorrow - Please come dressed for the weather! We will be outside, in our field and Whispering Woods for a large portion of the morning. Bring snow pants, mitts, boots, hat, warm coat, etc.

What did you learn today?
We learned natural disasters may occur in each region. 
How did you show what you learned?
We researched and recorded jot notes about about various natural disasters, such as flooding, earth quakes and hurricanes. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will be having a social studies quiz by the end of next week. We will want to begin studying.

We learned that the traditional medicine wheel had four colours which represented the four races.

We were able to use that information if we wanted our choose our own colours to represent ideas in our medicine wheel.

We finished reading our assigned pages and began one of six jobs that we will do over the next 6 weeks.

We need to have a system for how to handle all that we need to read in a week. Some students are reading ahead and some students are falling behind.

Nose Hill Connecting to the Past

What did you learn today?
We found out what the stone structure on Nose Hill is. It is an aboriginal Medicine Wheel which represented 4 different tribes. For more information, please visit:

We wrote about a character who was lost in the woods with a  certain character trait (sassy, lazy, paranoid, mischievous, boring, etc.)

We want to use this skill while writing longer stories and we will be 'lost' for longer on our next Fresh Air Friday.

We are practicing for a performance. We learned a move called the Prancing Pony.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to learn how to do it faster, the whole dance, the history of Bollywood, keeping the beat and why are we interested in this type of dance.

We did art, poetry, sang two songs, movement, choral speech, MCs, carried the wreath, sold poppies, gave out programs and greeted our guests today.

We want to recognize Remembrance Day tomorrow and maybe attend a ceremony tomorrow.

Regions of Canada

1 - Remembrance Day Assembly tomorrow at 10:45 am. Please wear black (dark) pants and white (light) top. Unless you are in the movement group then you are expected to wear all black (dark) - bring a photo of a family member who has belonged to the armed forces during the war or peace keeping missions.

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned about specific aspects of regions of Canada.
How did you show what you learned?
We did this by taking jot notes about the landscape and printing off pictures about the region as well as identifying specific occupations of people who live in the region. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will do deeper research about one region of Canada. For example, Interior Plains, Canadian Shield, Cordillera, Arctic, Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Lowlands, Atlantic regions.

What is the formation on Nose Hill?

Highlights
What did you learn today?
We discovered a unique and large rock pattern at the very top of Nose Hill. Using compasses we determined that the 4 triangles all pointed north. There were rocks that were red inside the triangles and some rocks had words printed on them. There was also artifacts in the center which we were curious about.  
How did you show what you learned?
We hiked over 7 km to the peak of Nose Hill and we happened upon it. 
Dear parents, your child did amazing today! It was chilly in the morning and everyone was well dressed and prepared for today. They walked a very great distance and not a single complaint! Way to go room 7 students!
What do you need to learn next?
Are there other rock formations like this on Nose Hill?
Who made this rock formation?
How would an anthropologist/archaeologist learn about what we discovered today?
Why is Nose Hill named Nose Hill?
Whats the story of the old rusty car? Can we go there next?

Nose Hill trip tomorrow

Agenda:
1 - We are headed to Nose Hill at 9 am tomorrow. Thank you to all the volunteers for making this possible.
We have spoken to the students about proper dress attire for tomorrow morning - they need to layer warm clothes, wear a toque, mitts or gloves. There will be some snow and ice on some of the trails so students need to wear proper boots or shoes with good grips.
The hike will take us to the top of Nose Hill. Students need to be prepared with a water bottle and extra snacks.
Nose Hill is the 6th largest urban park in Canada (Fish Creek is the 5th largest urban park in Canada). We will hike to the top of Nose Hill. At this point we will be able to see a panoramic view of Calgary.
