Algae Observations

Agenda:
Grade 6 students who are servers and platers for the Volunteer Tea must wear black pants and white shirts tomorrow afternoon. All grade 5/6s need to wear your Dr. Coffin t-shirt (if you have one) or a nice top for the performance in the afternoon

4 - Begin thinking about questions for Friday - Dr. Mark Strauss will be visiting our class to talk about the PBR (Photo Bio Reactors) Visit to  see some of the videos of the work we are doing:

5 - Grade 1/2 learning celebration is Thursday afternoon.

Learning Intention:
What did you learn today?
We learned how to operate microscopes and viewed different types of organisms under the microscopes. 
How did you show what you learned?
We viewed pollen, salt crystals, a mouth smear, paramecium. We also observed Zack preparing and creating a slide of our algae.
What do you need to learn next?



We will continue to watch the algae grow and be prepared for Dr. Strauss to come on Friday. We also need to pay close attention to the pump in Mr. P's room as it stopped working over the weekend. The algae still grew but not as well as the one in the library. We learned that the pump does make a difference in the growth.

Algae Bio Mass

Agenda:

Our Ukulele club did an amazing job this afternoon sharing all they have learned. They did an awesome job representing Dr. EW Coffin! Thank you to Miss Stephure for organizing this club and to her and Mrs. Polski for walking the club down to the community hall. 

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We learned that algae will eat carbon dioxide and take it out of the earth's atmosphere through a carbon neutral loop. 
 
How did you show what you learned?
We had a presentation from the U of C researchers to learn about the PBR and how we will harvest biomass each week. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to observe the growth and see if there is modifications we can make to the experiment to increase growth and oxygen output.

Consensus Chaos

Agenda:
Our U of C professors are coming tomorrow to explain the algae project to our class. The will return next week to do our first scraping of the algae and begin testing. 

Ukelele Club will be heading to the Brentwood Sportsplex for the Senior's Lunch tomorrow

2 - Parent Permission form for the U of C Algae Study - Due Thursday
3 - Volunteer Tea - May 24th 
4 - Bring your own plastic bag if you want to make your own Parachute tomorrow ...finally!!!!!

7 - Maple Leaf Coordinate Art is due tomorrow - Remember you must use a ruler!

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We had an Iroquois Confederacy Meeting. 
How did you show what you learned?
Tribes chose a Clan Mother and the Clan Mother chose a Chief. All 6 tribes came together after choosing how to defend against the pending attack and each tribe had to reach consensus to determine the best way to proceed. 
What do you need to learn next?
We have a worksheet to complete but it is not due tomorrow.

We applied our understanding of Coordinate Pairs while playing a game. 
How did you show what you learned?
We played Battleship and practiced naming coordinate pairs. 
What do you need to learn next?
We want to try using this skill again tomorrow and create an art piece.

What did you learn today?
We learned about Bernoulli's Principle from a group of our peers today. 
How did you show what you learned?
We listened to their skit and presentation. We completed a worksheet with descriptions and diagrams alongside the presenters. 
What do you need to learn next?
We need to view the other 4 presentations - 4 forces of flight, adaptations, streamlining and propulsion. We also have a guest speaker coming from WestJet on Wednesday.

We saw presentations and posters from our Grade 1/2 buddies. 
What do you need to learn next?
We can try and stay on the paths more often, Leave No Trace and take down forts if we build them.

Learning Intention
What did you learn today?
We learned that the PATs aren't as bad as we thought. 
We learned about being prepared for emergency situations and have a booklet to share with our families. 
How did you show what you learned?
We wrote a 2 and a half hour PAT with a story and a news article. 
By completing the booklet on our own or with a partner. 
What do you need to learn next?
We will apply this skill to our next 4 PATs in June and try not to get stressed :-)
We want to share this booklet and some ideas with our families tonight.
